Clearcover Celebrates the Underdog

Written by Team Clearcover

In 1976, the third Friday of December was designated "National Underdog Day," an occasion to cheer on sports teams or individuals whose success is seen as a long shot.  But for us at Clearcover, everyday is Underdog Day.  We see ourselves as underdogs, and aspire to demonstrate the determination and resilience they embody. Our Leadership Principles empower all Clearcover-ers to operate with an underdog's mindset in our daily actions, and we honor collegiate athletes who have overcome adversity and found success in their sports with our Inspired Underdog sponsorships.

Clearcover, a six year-old start-up company, is an underdog in an industry dominated by large companies with decades of established presence.  We embrace this position and use it to our advantage by facing challenges head on and displaying fortitude in all of the work we do.  As Clearcover's co-founder and CEO Kyle Nakatsuji wrote in a blog post last year, "Our team knows what it looks like to face adversity with courage and tenacity, putting in behind-the-scenes effort each day to play the long game—and win." The drive to model our behavior on underdogs is integral to being a Clearcover-er, as stated in our Leadership Principles.

Clearcover empowers all team members to act as leaders, and our Leadership Principles guide the way we think, behave, and interact with each other.  Along with advising Clearcover-ers to "Think 'Better-er'" and "Operate Like an Owner," these principles encourage us to "Act Like an Underdog:"

"Clearcover-ers find ways to succeed, even under the most difficult circumstances, because we operate with an underdog's mindset. We outhustle the competition, we're resilient in the face of adversity, and we respond to setbacks with grit and determination."

Clearcover's commitment to honoring underdogs and their spirit reaches outside of our company through our Inspired Underdog college athlete sponsorships.  As Kyle wrote, "We believe that hardworking, inspired underdogs—when surrounded by the right support—can make a huge difference in their teams, the marketplace, and even the world." As of this writing, these $10,000 sponsorships are supporting athletes like Silas Allred, a wrestler at University of Nebraska who overcame a troubled home life growing up to find success at his sport on a collegiate level. Another recipient, Madi Cole, is a member of the women's volleyball team at Texas Christian University.  She recovered from a spinal fusion surgery caused by scoliosis to help her college break a school record for blocking during her freshman year.  And Yor Anei, one of the of the most recent Inspired Underdogs, pushed himself to work harder than his peers to overcome a disability caused by a childhood accident, and now plays men's basketball for DePaul University.

At Clearcover, a relatively new addition to the long-established auto insurance market, we encourage all team members to operate with an underdog's mindset and, through our Inspired Underdog college sponsorships, honor others who have displayed grit and determination to overcome adversity.  We're currently looking to add more members to our team who are ready to bring the underdog spirit to their work.  If this sounds like you, we invite you to apply for one of our open positions today!
