Juneteenth: A Day of Remembrance and Celebration

June 22, 2023

At Clearcover, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We believe that Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) play a crucial role in achieving this goal by hosting informative events that educate our employees. Recently, our ERG Clearcover African American Network (CAAN) hosted an event for Juneteenth that was both informative and enjoyable.

The event, which was led by CAAN Member Deja Aggrey, kicked off with a historical lesson from CAAN leader Jerrell West, who provided background information about Juneteenth, a holiday that dates back to the Civil War.

Did you know that Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States? On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free. It's an important day in American history, and we are proud to acknowledge and celebrate it at Clearcover. Understanding the significance and history behind Juneteenth is essential as we aim to continue building an inclusive culture and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about the holiday through this event.

To test employee knowledge and help identify true and false statements, we played a fun trivia game on Kahoot! The game was a hit and added an element of excitement to the event. The meeting concluded with an empowering discussion about the importance of learning about Juneteenth in schools, celebrating Juneteenth, and what Juneteenth means to Clearcover employees.

Discussions were centered around how Clearcover employees celebrate and educate themselves about Juneteenth. Underwriter K.D. Sims shared that his band will be performing at a festival and will sing songs like, "I'm Black and Proud" by James Brown. Our COO Derek Brigham is attending an annual Jazz Festivial which this year commemorates Juneteenth.  Other attendees chimed in to say they were celebrating by attending festivals hosted by their towns, running 5Ks, or enjoying the long weekend with friends and family.

At Clearcover, we value the importance of events like these in promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace culture. We are grateful to our ERGs and their leaders for their hard work and dedication in organizing these events. We look forward to continuing to learn and celebrate together as a team.
